Sunday Experiences

Our first Sunday in France.  We decided to attend the service at the Greek Orthodox Monastary just down the road from here.  It is in a beautiful location, set in the valley and was very peaceful.  We stood in the back of the church, because we didn't know what we were doing and it seemed that the rest of the non-locals were doing the same.  The women had to wear scarves on their heads, and we weren't really supposed to be wearing anything above the knees (which we were, but we didn't know.)  We had no idea what they were doing or saying but it was still a wonderful experience to be there.  The building itself isn't very old and it was ornately decorated and the entire surfaces were painted with brightly coloured murals.  We may go back later in the week for a tour of the Monastary as it is only 5 kms from our house.

St. Nazaire en Royans - old town
After lunch we headed to St. Nazaire, where there is a 100 year old Aquaduct next to the old historic village.  It was VERY hot but we rallied on, walked across the top of the Aquaduct and also wandering the little town.
Visiting the Aquaduct

Since the St. Antoine L'Abbaye was closed yesterday, we went back to see if we could get a tour of the Abby and/or the village.  They were not able to provide an English tour so we looked through the museum (everything in French of course, so we didn't get much out of that, except to view some really old Bibles on display).  At 5:00 pm we went into the Abby and listened to their weekly organ concert.  Pretty amazing to be in a 1000 year old church, listening to a pipe organ!!

And sunflowers... glorious sunflowers!!  Be still my heart....

Cameron and Rodger went back to the local sports bar to watch the final soccer game... France vs. Portugal... while the rest stayed home to watch it on the couch with our jammies on.  Good thing, because near the end, Simon threw up and barely saw the end of the game.  France lost, which was very disappointing! Apparently they were less crazy at the bar than they were the other night.  Still, there were flares and fireworks at the end.  (Simon must've had heat stroke because he was fine after a good night's sleep.)
