| Fountain in Nimes... is it famous? No idea |
Nimes wasn't really on my list of places to visit but since we were so close, Rodger suggested we should make the effort. If we skip it, we may regret it later. So off we went to the big city.
First impressions were not great. It seemed the entired City centre was under major construction and traffic was horrendous. But we managed to find some parking, which is always the first hurdle in any place! :-)
The most famous place to see in Nimes is the best preserved Roman Arenes, an amphitheatre that is similar to the one in Rome. It was built around 100 AD.
| Escaping the thunderstorm |
Once the rain and thunderstorm subsided we headed to the other super famous Roman structure, the Greek-style Temple, which is one of the most remarkably preserved Roman temples in the world. Inside, we watched a very informative video of the history of this temple, the arena and Nimes as a whole.
So now we don't need to go to Rome or Greece! It's all here, in France! ;-)
Time to head to my happy place... another "most beautiful villages of France"... Lourmarin this time! I just can't get enough of these beautiful villages, they are all the same, and yet so different. Always something see around the corner, little hidden cobblestone streets that leads to either nowhere or somewhere! The quaint shops, bistros.... I wish I could be dropped off here for a few hours on my own, to wander aimlessly, drink a coffee and just people-watch.
Oh look... .we found yet another one, this one is Roussillon, which has distinctive ochre coloured stone/earth and the village itself is very colourful as well. It was late in the day and it was starting to rain a bit, but we took a wander through for a few minutes, but we were all anxious to get home by this time.
