Annecy and the Alps

( We woke up this morning with my phone full of texts from concerned friends.... found out that there was a terrorist attack in Nice last night, during the Bastille celebrations and more than 85 people were killed.  Such a senseless tragedy, yet again. )

Note:  I am tired of constantly fiddling with photo placement... so here they are, in no particular order and not properly placed... )

Market day in Annecy
Amazing!!  Love it here

Today we went to Annecy, which is 2 hours North, in the Alps.  It was worth the drive... we loved it!  The canals and cute little cobblestone streets, and coloured buildings.  So beautiful!  There was, yet again, a huge market going on so it was absolutely packed with people!  What fun.

We bought our first pain au chocolat, and just wandered the many streets before finding a cute little restaurant next to a canal for lunch.  The servers were so lovely (a nice change... not that the French aren't nice, they just aren't particularly friendly) and tolerated our indecision and broken French with smiles.  At the end of the meal, the old waitress tapped Ruby's nose and came back with some lollipops.

I was so bummed that "the" landmark of the famous Annecy was behind tarps and scaffolding... augh, bad timing I guess.  When I mentioned it to Shirley she said "at least they restore things in Europe... we just tear it all down,"  Very true.  The same thing happened yesterday at a 1000 year old monastery in Leoncel, a very small village with basically just a, well, a monastery! Scaffolding all the way up the ancient steeple. And back in 1998 the Vatican was under restoration, and I remember being so disappointed.

So anyway, a great day in Annecy, which ended with a swim in the gorgeous, warm, turquoise, crystal-clear waters of Lake Annecy.  From there, we headed around the Lake, to take the scenic road home through the Alps.  There was an accident along the one-lane road so traffic came to a standstill for a very long time!! The Alps were beautiful, little villages up in the hills, always with a church steeple.  In the end, it took us almost 4 hours to get home... we drove through Grenoble and decided we didn't like it so maybe we won't bother going back to explore it?  It just seems too big and not very pretty.  Or maybe we were in the wrong places... but we were in a few, as we were lost of course. ;-)  (This is where I lost it and said "forget the scenic route, I wanna go home!  So we got onto the highway.)

Ah, home sweet home,  Have I mentioned before how great it is to have a home to come to, at the end of a long day?  I think I have, but I will say it again.
